Title tag length checker

This title tag length checker counts your characters and shows whether Google is likely to cut the title short. Titles up to 60 characters usually show in full; add a meta description and URL to preview the whole search result.

Google may rewrite titles and snippets, and pixel widths vary a little by device and font, so treat this as a close guide rather than a guarantee.

Why Google truncates title tags

The title link in a Google result has room for about 600 pixels, which is roughly 50 to 60 characters of ordinary text. Past that, Google ends the title with an ellipsis. Wide letters such as capital W and M use the room faster, so a title in capitals is cut sooner than one in sentence case.

A truncated title still counts for search, but the searcher only sees the start of it, so the start is where the page's topic should be.

How to shorten a title without losing the keyword

When a title runs long, cut from the end and from filler first:

  • Keep the search phrase at the front, and drop words that repeat it.
  • Shorten the brand suffix, or drop it on pages where the brand adds nothing.
  • Remove dates and words such as "ultimate" or "best" that don't describe the page.
  • Use a colon or dash to split topic and detail instead of a full sentence.
